Mangalore, Feb 28: Jain Milan, a meeting of Jain community members spread across Dakshina Kannada districts, Udupi, North Kannada districts up to Karwar and Chickmagalur districts was held at the Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College auditorium here on Sunday February 28.

Jain Milan women’s wing president Anitha Surendra Kumar inaugurated the meet, which is an annual feature organized for inter mingling of the community members and thereby foster development of the community and society. Dr. S.K. Jain, famous for his programme on astrology in Udaya TV and editor of Kalachakra Ephemeris delivered the endowment lecture.

Dr Jain spoke on the relationship between science and astrology. He stressed that astrology is a science is not a mere vague calculation. 

State Apex Bank president M N Rajendra Kumar released a souvenir, Mangalore Milana on the occasion. Zonal president M S Mrityunjaya presided. Veena S K Jain and Pushparaj jain were among others present.  

Jain Milans from various divisions were given an opportunity to showcase their talent through cultural programme. 

The valedictory ceremony was presided by D Rajendra Kumar of Dharmasthala. Moodbidri-Mulki MLA Abhayachandra Jain was the chief guest. The prizes were distributed to the participants in the cultural programme. Rajesh M and Sanath Kumar Jain compered the programme.

Morning Feature: NBC = Nothing But Curls? (Ask Ms. Crissie) - DAILY KOS

Of course the BPI staff have our own Olympics every weekend, with the staff poker game. This week's signature performance was the Professor of Astrology Janitor's amazing Downhill run, where he had a slight miss at only one gate. Sadly, that gate was not folding his Jack-Ten of Hearts when Chef made that big raise before the flop. The Queen-Ten-Jack flop with three different suits left him sure his Jacks and Tens had to be good, and they would have been against almost anything Chef had. Aside from that slight bobble, he bet his two pair as strongly as he could, and that's why his mound of chips went downhill when Chef turned up her Ace-King of Clubs for an Ace-high straight.

In other news, we hadn't realized the Professor of Astrology Janitor's signature plaintive mewling was derived from John Williams' Olympic Theme until this week. Chef paraded to the kitchen for our own opening ceremonies: she opened the refrigerator to get out the ingredients for a Curly-Endive Salad with Bacon and Poached Eggs. We just hope she isn't cooking the bacon and eggs over an Olympic torch. Meanwhile, we turn to this week's mail....

I'm like a really good skier, y'know? And like, I'd really really like to be in the Olympics someday. I ski really really really fast and, like, I win every race in my age group. I train every day and work really really really really hard, y'know? The only thing is, some friends say I should let my blonde hair grow really really really really really long, like Lindsay Vonn's, so I can, like, get on TV and stuff. I like, like it really really really really really really short so it doesn't get whipped around in the wind. What should I do? Really? Sorry, but we couldn't resist. We're sure you'll outgrow the adolescent syntax, unless you take up snowboarding. As to your question, we can't prove that a certain television network bent over backward to have a camera on Ms. Vonn's long, curly, blonde hair at every possible opportunity, and to her credit Ms. Vonn would be an amazing athlete whatever her hair color or style. We suggest you concentrate on your sport and your schoolwork, style your hair in the manner most comfortable for you, and note that not every female athlete spotlighted in this year's Olympic coverage had long, curly, blonde hair. That network must have spotlighted at least one female athlete who didn't, even if we missed it.

Speaking of curls, my wife and I disagree about figure skating. I say the Triple Axle is called that because the woman spins around an axle in the air. My wife says the jump is named after the man who invented it. I say please, who ever heard of a guy named Triple? Who's right?

Sadly, we fear you'll still be wanting. The Axel - note the spelling - is named for Norwegian figure skater Axel Paulsen. He first performed the jump in 1882, and it is the only jump in figure skating where the skater leaves the ice facing forward. Because all jumps are landed backward, the Axel requires an extra one-half revolution in the air, thus it's the most difficult jump to perform. The "triple" is not part of the jump's name; it refers to the number of revolutions.

Dear Curling,

We, too, were pleased by the growth in popularity for curling over the past few Olympics, and by both the quality and quantity of coverage that sport received this year. We, too, are saddened that we won't be able to watch curling again for another four years. The Canadian men having to pause during the final end while their fans spontaneously sang "Oh Canada," was among the most touching moments in the entire Olympics. Well deserved congratulations to them, to the Swedish women, and to all the other athletes who made this year's Olympic curling such a delight.

As for the salad, it's simple. Cut ½ pound of bacon into ½" strips, then fry. Place the cooked bacon in a bowl with the leaves from two small heads (about 1½ pounds) of curly endive and 4 cups of bread croutons. Pour all but ¼ cup of the bacon fat from the pan, then add 4 tablespoons of olive oil, 3 tablespoons of red wine vinegar, 1 clove minced garlic, ½ teaspoon dried thyme, a pinch each of salt and black pepper, and warm the dressing for about 2 minutes. Pour over the salad and toss; the endive will wilt slightly. Divide the salad into four serving bowls.

To poach the eggs, fill a small saucepan two-thirds full with water, add a teaspoon of red wine vinegar, and bring to a boil. Break four eggs separately, each into a small bowl, and gently slide them one at a time into the water. Reduce heat to a low simmer and poach for about 3 minutes, until the whites are set but the yolks are still soft. Remove with a slotted spoon onto a paper towel and season lightly with salt and pepper. Place one egg atop each salad serving. Bon appétit!

Kancheepuram (TN), Feb 14 (PTI) Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathy Vishwa Maha Vidyalaya University (SCSVMV) at nearby Enathur is all set to launch an online course in astrology, a top official said today. The curriculum for 'jyothisham' course is prepared by Professors from Mysore and Osmania universities and would be launched on its website soon, Vice-Chancellor of the university V Shivakumar told reporters here.

He said the university was offering free Sanskrit certificate courses online and had launched its centre for South Asian Studies with courses like anthropology, history and other traditional studies.

The SCSVMV has signed teacher exchange programmes with universities of Singapore and Thailand.

The SCSVMV has bagged Rs 19 lakh from the Atomic Energy Department for a research project, he said, adding the institute would soon collaborate with University of Korima in Mexico in astrology and silpa sasthra and Tamil and Sanskrit studies.

Capricorn and Aries Compatibility

Capricorn and Aries compatibility is a bit of a hit and miss situation. It is not to say that these two signs are not compatible, however it takes a lot of work for them to get on well together. Some people are willing to make the sacrifices to get the ultimate rewards, but other people just aren't willing to put in the time to get this relationship to work. If you are either an Aries or a Capricorn and are thinking of entering into a romantic relationship with someone of the opposite sign, you should know some of the basic traits for each sign and then see how those traits will either blend or clash with each other.

Both Capricorn and Aries are very headstrong signs. However, this headstrongness manifests itself in different ways for each sign. Capricorns feel that work is very important. They like to plan and all goal oriented. This means that when they come up with a plan they like to stick with it. They might even get stubborn if they feel they are being distracted for their goals. Aries can also be very stubborn, but not over the long term. Aries is a very impulsive zodiac sign. They like to make decisions on the fly but when they come up with their plan they also like to stick to it. Even the two different styles of thinking and planning can come into conflict when Aries and Capricorn are together. However, since both sides like to argue they will probably enjoy their clashes over how to do things.

The good thing about a match between an Aries and a Capricorn is that they can become an incredible force. The term power couple is made for just such a match up as this. What they need to overcome their differences and maximize their mutual potential is a lot of patience and understanding. For instance, Capricorns are very conservative with their money and like to save. Aries, on the other hand, is very extravagant and feels as though money is burning a hole in his pocket. If both sides can talk about that difference and make a compromise then good things can happen. However, compromise is not easy for either of these signs. If you think that you want to go in for the long haul on a Capricorn and Aries relationship you need to talk out all these issues with your partner.

Also i was looking at a demostration of what a: earthquake does here on earth on the national geographic or history channel and i noticed that it behaves like an Exponential function and a sequence but using polynomials as the exponent, the example that i saw acted just like that, luckily i was reading algebra at the moment...

Also what if astrology can predict earthquakes or volcanic eruptions...

The Year Of The Metal Tiger

Hence, we enter the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Tiger. The Tiger, in case you are the superstitious type, is said to be an extremely tumultuous sign. One article I read noted ''The year of the Tiger is very likely to be a volatile year. Everything is taken to its limit in this big and bold year. It can also be a year of war, disasters and all kinds of disputes. It is a year for massive change.''

However, this year is not only the Year of the Tiger, it is the year of the Metal Tiger, something that occurs only once every 60 years in the Chinese calendar. In fact, the last time China rang in a Metal Tiger, Chairman Mao had just taken control of the land and promptly embarked on one of the bloodiest experiments in central planning ever.

Of course, everyone knows astrology is just a bunch of claptrap. Now, who wants to tell the Chinese?

Michael Hanlon's 10 Questions Science Can't Answer (Yet), now available in paperback, presents serious enquiries into matters such as the nature of time, the sentience of animals, the essence of self and the composition of the universe.

Hanlon is a witty writer who takes esoteric science and makes it both intelligible and entertaining. However, 10 Questions Science Can't Answer (Yet) is an uneven book. I'm not convinced, for example, that one of the great questions vexing the science community is "what are we going to do with the stupid?"

Hanlon wants to know what we're going to do about the "10-15 per cent or so that lie below IQ 85 and above 70". As heavy industry becomes increasingly automated, there are fewer and fewer jobs that require mere brawn. Hanlon, a science editor at the Daily Mail, says that the "well-meaning left" tend to ignore this problem. But, he warns: "This is dangerous, and harmful, mostly to the stupid themselves."

The chapter ends in typical tabloidese: "When is somebody going to do something about it?" an exasperated Hanlon wants to know.

Mumbai: The Bombay high court today sought replies from Union home ministry, Maharashtra Food and Drugs department, and State Director General of Police on a PIL that seeks ban on practise of astrology, Vastu-shastra, gemology, and similar things.

Petitioner Bhagawanji Rayani, who heads the NGO 'Janhit Manch', has also sought details regarding implementation of Drugs and Magic Remedies Act (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.

Rayani has made famous astrologer Bejan Daruwala a respondent to his PIL. Other respondents include 'Vastu' consultants Dr Raviraj, Rajesh Shah, Chandrashekhar Guruji; gemologist Bhavik Sanghavi, and one 'Brahmarshi Shri Kumar Swamiji' who allegedly claims to have powers to heal even Swine Flu.

Rayani argued that in compliance of directive principles of the Constitution, which require government to encourage scientific temper, practise of astrology should be banned because it is not a science.

However, advocate Adwait Sethana, for the Union Government, argued that laws such as Magic Remedies Act provide adequate safeguards in this regard. "These things are being practised in India for thousands of years," he said.

However, Rayani said that the fact that astrology is being practised for long doesn't justify its continuation. The lawyer for gemologist Bhavik Sanghvi argued that even the Supreme Court had held in an earlier case that astrology is a science, and could be included in the university curriculum.

Division bench of justice FI Rebello and justice JH Bhatia said that various views were possible on this isse. "But we want to know how many prosecutions have been launched under Magic Remedies Act," the judges said.

Rayani also claimed to have carried out a sting operation, where he visited the ashram of Bramharshi Kumar Swamiji in Mumbai to test latter's claim of having healing powers. Rayani alleges in the petition that these claims were found to be bogus.

However, local police in suburban Andheri took no action upon his complaint of cheating, he says. Adjourning the hearing for four weeks, court sought replies from Union Home ministry and others.

Among other things, Rayani has demanded that astrologers, vastu consultants and others who make unscientific claims must "write in their advertisements that service is only for entertainment and not tried and tested".

Glenn Beck Through Vedic Astrology

Glenn Beck, a rising star in the conservative talk radio/TV/publishing market, has a rather interesting astrological chart. We can use astrology to help us better understand who may be sincere and then those who sound sincere, but may have a few distorting lenses in their psyches.

How sincere or distorted is Glenn Beck?

This will not be an exhaustive look at his horoscope, but an overview of its main features; it will be using Vedic/sidereal calculations and interpretations. His birthday is published as February 10, 1964 in Everett, Washington, USA; but there is no birth time available. However, using his online biographies and making a study of his videos I've made a rough rectification of it to about 10 am.

Due to the lack of specifically-timed biographical data about Beck (essential to rectification), this article will focus mainly on the Vedic Moon Ascendant chart (called chandra lagna), which does not require an accurate birth time. However I will say a few things about his ascendant as I have estimated it:

An Afflicted Ascendant Ruler

Beck has Aries is rising indicating an aggressive stance, a tendency to be impulsive, and plenty of motivation to succeed in life. The ruler of the ascendant therefore is Mars, which falls in the eleventh house which is good for financial security.

However, Mars falls in the sign of Aquarius which is not a good placement for it, and it is flanked by malefic planets (the Sun and Saturn), which is called papakartari ("scissors") yoga. An afflicted Mars usually can be seen in a person with issues of anger, and acts out with rage or violence in extreme cases.

I would attribute Beck's afflicted Mars to an observable tension in his appearance, which is also reflected in a slightly higher pitched voice because the head, neck, and vocal cords are clenched. There is a definite tone of alarm in his speech, because he's basically outraged at liberals and those he believes are threats.

Beck also had a personal history at one time of drug and alcohol addiction, and he had a number of challenging episodes in his life including the mysterious drowning of his mother and suicide of his stepbrother. Challenging life events and suffering in the midst of them can be explained by an afflicted ruler of the ascendant.

A High Number of Weak Planets

One thing that strikes me a bout Beck's chart, regardless of any estimated birth time, is that the principal points in his chart are all intrinsically weak by being either of very late degrees or very early degrees. When a planet in a person's chart is not in the middle region of any sign, its strength is cut by half or more. I

have found also many times that there is also a definite suppression or over-compensation of the nature of the planet when it is in that state. In Vedic astrology this is called baladi avastha or physical state of the planets, planets are at full strength only at the mid region of any sign, and get progressively weaker the farther from the center they fall.

Planets at Low or High Degrees

Beck's Sun is at 29 degrees of Capricorn; this could come off as a brazen over-domineering style with a lot of scheming, calculation, and trying to be very controlling; or alternatively it could cause a person to take an extreme self-denigrating stance in life, which would be the pretext to engage in addictive or self-destructive behaviors such as with drugs and alcohol.

Glenn Beck's Moon is at 27 degrees Sagittarius; this could cause an outlandish, even shocking kind of personal style that likes to use big words and bold pronouncements and feeds off of excitement; or alternatively it could cause a sort of over-opinionation or intolerance of differing viewpoints.

Jupiter as the ruler of Beck's Moon (a very important foundational planet regardless of actual birth time) is at 24 degrees Pisces; this could come off as being subject to influences which can cause one to feel lost and confused and engage in escapist tendencies, and they would also be vulnerable to negative environmental influences. Self esteem is not typically great, or it could flip into a sort of semi-messianic cult of ego and arrogance. The worst kind of enemy could be considered to be one who believes he or she is on a mission from God.

Jupiter is in its rulership and therefore its support of the Moon in Beck's chart is very good; and everyone can agree that Beck as had a lot of good luck in life with radio and television shows, road shows, and book deals. I've already mentioned in part the ruler of Beck's rectified ascendant, Mars; it to is afflicted additionally by being of very low degrees (0 degrees Aquarius); bringing in the potential abuse of righteous indignation.

The dispositor of Beck's Sun in Capricorn, Saturn, is well placed by sign but it is also afflicted by being at three degrees of Aquarius; this seems to have the effect of simultaneously helping and hindering his Sun. He has self assurance, but maybe too much of his ego is involved. He may not be totally averse to taking an "ends justify the means" kind of approach to life, as Capricorn can be very "shrewd".

Dependent on the Good Will of Others

A weak Sun and Moon possibly would have to lean on the assistance of others to get ahead, and having to pay the appropriate price to get their assistance. In the case of a major media star, you have to bow to the wishes of your corporate sponsors. In the case of the major networks, they are arms of the corporate-financial interests

that already run the world and who are deeply involved in policy decisions, putting choice candidates into media prominence and office, and international geo-political situations.

Most likely any message from Beck is going to be filtered through the editorial requirements of those same corporate masters, so basically his message is likely to be compromised. Beck plays the Republican-Democrat divide well, even though that is a false paradigm if there ever was one. Both sides of the political isle in almost any nation are directed by the same single corporate-financial cartels.

Some Western Astrology Considerations

Glenn Beck - If I take a look at the more purely western astrology configurations I can see that Beck's Sun is also afflicted by a square from Neptune giving questionable foundations to his self assurance, enabling addictions in the past, not to mention an inflated but tenuous sense of ego and pride. There could be a weakness of willpower that is vulnerable to intimidation by more powerful and malevolent forces (such as those who control vast sums of money and seek to control the world).Neptune also makes a quincunx to Jupiter, increasing the potential of his ideologies to be colored by deceitful and overly-religious influences. Beck was a Roman Catholic now converted to Mormonism.

Beck describes himself as a conservative-libertarian and not necessarily partisan. With the Obama administration he (and a lot of other Republicans and conservatives) stands to benefit greatly because he is not hindered by his party being in power, which he would be expected to be loyal to. The ousted party always seems to be able to take the ideological high ground against the opposition, which then reverses when they retake key seats.

Some Good Points

Now to be fair to Beck himself, I also have to point out some good points in his chart. His Saturn, while it is devitalized somewhat by being of low degrees, it is in its rulership in the natal chart and exalted in the navamsha. He comes across as a self-styled teacher endeavoring to make his points plain (even using a blackboard), and he does succeed at creating a more ordered and sound view of society with his libertarianist points.He also does have an exalted Venus and Jupiter in its rulership in the twelfth house, which could add to the tendency to engage in escapist or addictive behaviors, it also points to a refined spiritual outlook, sensitivity, and real concern for the benefit of humanity nevertheless.
