Sports don't really interest me and for me mention of the Winter Olympics is a real conversation-stopper. Nonetheless I do understand that a lot of people are sports fans, and if you're a keen skier or snowboarder the Vancouver Winter Olympics might be fascinating.
From an astrological point of view everything which has a beginning has a birth chart and these Olympics are no exception.
The Opening Ceremony was at 6 pm on February 12. When we set up a chart for this time, it becomes pretty obvious that astrologers weren't consulted, which seems strange. If you're having a big event, like the Winter Olympics, you'd surely want it to start at a favourable time.
What I particularly don't like about this horoscope is the fact that it's just before a New Moon. In other words this Olympics is getting under way at the very end of a lunar cycle. The energy is stagnant, and the focus is on the past and not the future.
Also, the ruler of the Ascendant isn't very well placed. To be more specific, Virgo is rising, so the Ascendant ruler is Mercury. And Mercury is making a stressful, opposition aspect to Mars.
At the very least this suggests a difference of opinion, but it might also hint at the controversy surrounding the death of Nodar Kumaritashvili, the Georgian luger.
It should be pointed out that Nodar Kumaritashvili's fatal accident took place before the opening ceremony, and this opening ceremony was dedicated to his memory. So we see a reflection of the rather mournful symbolism of the dying phase of a lunar cycle.
As far as the horoscope of Nodar Kumaritashvili is concerned, it seems that he was born on November 25 1988, making him a Sagittarian.
Luging is a high-speed sport, that as far as I can gather is akin to sledging down a steep hill. This is a very Sagittarian activity. After all, Sagittarians have a great sense of adventure, and they often enjoy going very fast in an outdoor environment.
Yet what really stands out in Nodar Kumaritashvili's horoscope is his Mars, in the fifth degree of Aries. Mars is the planet of assertion, and it's often connected with sport. It was very well placed in Aries, especially as it made a favourable aspect to his Sagittarius Sun.
On the day of his death, February 12, Mars was in the fifth degree of Leo, making easy-going aspects to his natal Sun and Mars. His desire for action, and speed, ran very smoothly. Indeed so smoothly that there was nothing much to stop it.
Yet that wasn't the whole story. One of the main astrological events of early 2010 is a stressful, 90-degree aspect between Saturn and Pluto. This Saturn-Pluto aspect triggered Kumaritashvili's Mars, and encouraged him to push himself to the limit.
Going back to the horoscope of the Vancouver Winter Olympics, the Saturn-Pluto aspect is inescapable. Something bad was likely to happen, and any athlete whose horoscope tied in with this aspect would automatically be vulnerable.
I think that if Nodar Kumaritashvili had consulted an astrologer, he would have been advised not to compete in these Olympics. However with his headstrong Sun in Sagittarius and Mars in Aries I doubt very much whether he would have paid much attention to this advice.
