Of all the images in the Major Arcana, the Tarots Hanged Man is most shrouded in mystery. On the eve of 2012 this figure will begin to exert an influence on forthcoming events. The recent attention drawn to the year 2012 and the Mayan prophecies is not a coincidence. What remains of the prophecies suggests that our world will undergo a series of trials leading to an enlightened outlook. If a change of consciousness is imminent then it will emerge according to this cards symbolism. The illustration depicts a man suspended by one foot with his arms behind his back and one leg crossed over the other in a figure of four. He appears to be calmly enjoying the view.
In a scene from the film 'The Dead Poets Society' Robin Williams' character convinces his students to view the classroom while standing on top of their desks. Their initial embarrassment soon transforms to astonishment. The room that was so familiar to them now appears radically different. Is this the secret of the Hanged Man. Has he decided to see the world from an entirely fresh perspective?
What might have prompted his decision? It is possible that he encountered a personal crisis or a crucial turning point. Perhaps, having laboured under illusion for so long he may have finally awakened to the need for change. Faced with any of these events the Hanged Man might have perceived an opportunity to recapture his life before it was too late. He probably paused, examined his previous attitude and the outcome of his actions. He may have assessed his behaviour and decided that he needed to sacrifice some of his desires to improve his lot. To correct the course of his life, however, he will first have needed to see things differently.
Although 2012 is liable to provide a wake-up call that will revise current thinking, a new cycle of events has all ready begun. Significant changes of attitude will occur, voluntary or otherwise, during 2010. This year will be a marker for what is in peoples' hearts and minds. Materialism, relationships and personal beliefs will all be subject to reform. It is a beneficial time to gain an understanding of present circumstances and to initiate a new approach with respect to existing goals. In other words it is an opportunity to pre-empt the Hanged Man.
Although the Hanged Man chose to be suspended upside down in order to glimpse the world from a new standpoint, a change of consciousness often begins with small steps and an exploration of new possibilities. Routine or habitual activity crystallizes over time until it sends the mind to sleep and severely narrows the field of opportunity. An introduction of small, purposeful activities that disrupt routine, for instance varying the usual route to work, will have an enlivening effect upon the psyche and create a sense of excitement.
More importantly they may lead to a new appreciation of what is truly valuable. Resistance to change often arises from a reluctance to leave a comfort zone, however unsatisfactory it may be, but what if there was an infinitely better future just around the corner? A willingness to make new friends, walk occasionally rather than drive, to taste different foods, to travel to new destinations and to introduce new colours into a drab environment will all open up the door for magical possibilities to enter.
This Tarot card possesses a number of different facets. They all suggest however that it is imperative to turn the world on its head once in a while in order to see what is all ready there and yet hidden.c
